How to Prepare for Sedation Dentistry

Dental phobia is a crippling condition that can keep you from getting necessary treatment. The irrational fear and uncontrollable thoughts associated with this condition can cause an extreme aversion to anything related to dentistry.

Sedation dentistry is a safe and accessible option that can help you overcome your dental phobia temporarily. It involves the administration of sedatives into the vein, by mouth or through inhalation. Sedatives target your nervous system and put you in a state of relaxation that ranges from mild to deep.

How to Choose a Clinic

If you’ve never been sedated for a dental procedure before, it’s important to do research on clinics that practice sedation dentistry in your area. Once you’ve made a list of clinics, look for qualifications and legitimate reviews from actual patients. A reputable clinic should have a qualified in-house anaesthesiologist who focuss in sedation and drug administration. The clinic must also have the necessary equipment for sedation dentistry.

Precautions

The method of sedation that is right for you depends on several factors: your health, level of fear and tolerance for discomfort. If you are mildly anxious, oral conscious sedation may be best. Deep sedation is ideal for patients with severe dental phobia.

  • Tell your physician if you’re currently taking any medication that could potentially counteract the effect of sedatives. Disclose any chronic illness as well as possible allergic reactions to sedation drugs.
  • Avoid caffeine before the procedure. Caffeine contains a psychoactive drug that stimulates your nervous system. Doses between 250 to 500 milligrams can counteract the effects of sedative diapezam and make it less effective. Caffeine can also make you more anxious before your dental appointment.
  • Avoid foods and drinks right before sedation. Foods and drinks may induce vomiting.
  • Bring someone with you when you go to the clinic. The sedatives may not wear off immediately after the procedure, so you need someone to take you home.
