Recovering From Dental Implant Surgery

Getting conventional dental implants is a complicated process that involves multiple appointments and long recovery periods. After consultation, the oral surgeon surgically embeds the implant in the bone and lets the area heal completely. The abutment is then attached to the implant, and the crown is attached to the abutment. It takes about 10 to 12 weeks for the average patient to fully recover from dental implant surgery, but several factors can lengthen this period.

Bone Grafts

Bone grafting is required for patients with thin bone in the jaw. The procedure is costly and invasive and prolongs healing time even further.

Implant Failure

Problems like loose screws and failure of the implants to fuse with bone also lengthens recovery. The dentist removes the implants and lets the patient heal for one or two months before new ones can be inserted.

Infection

The long recovery time may increase chances of infection. Bacteria can come from plaque, leftover food particles and foreign objects inserted in the mouth. Common symptoms of infection include fever, pain and inflammation.

Some tips for faster recovery:

  • To prevent infection, take antibiotics exactly as prescribed by your dentist. Avoid consuming alcohol or other drugs that can weaken the effect of antibiotics.
  • Keep your mouth clean. Brush and floss regularly or after every meal if possible.
  • Get enough sleep and eat a balanced diet.
  • Use coping techniques to keep stress under control. Managing stress can also keep your immune system strong.
  • Avoid cigarette smoking. Smoking tobacco can increase the chances of implant failure.
  • Avoid strenuous activities like heavy lifting that can cause your incisions to burst open. The same goes for contact sports that can cause trauma to the implant site.
