Sedation Dentistry: Not Just For The Fearful

Hello and welcome to another July blog of the New Albany Implants blog!

In our Southern Indiana dental office, we are big on sedation dentistry. Most folks in the outside world associate sedation with treating dental anxiety, you know, when you are afraid of the dentist. It does work really well to help people relax when they get here, but sedation dentistry techniques also have a whole bunch of other benefits that may be of interest to you as you plot your next dental procedure or cosmetic enhancement.

Keep reading to learn more, and then be sure to follow up with our team to put your new knowledge into action.

Time Flies

Sedation can make the time required to work on your teeth and gums pass a lot faster. Even better, sedation can make it so you have very little memory of your procedure.

One Trip

There’s a limit to how much a patient can handle before it’s been simply too much dental care for one trip. However, with the help of sedation, you can get all the care you need, even multiple procedures, all at once. This will save you time and money in the end.

No Gags

If you don’t like the idea of weird dental tools and strange (albeit competent) hands going into your mouth this can cause a subconscious gagging reaction that slows down or interrupts our plans for treatment. The nice thing about sedation is that your reflex will be relaxed along with the rest of your body, and we will be able to do what we do best: look after the health and appearance of your smile.

Lets You Sit Still

Are you fidgety? Even mild levels of sedation can help patients sit still long enough to get the care they deserve. Sometimes folks with disabilities can really benefit from this kind of assistance.

Decreases Sensitivity

If you have teeth or gums that are so sensitive you can’t handle even the simplest of dental treatments, sedation can help with that too.

4 Levels Of Sedation

Like we said, we take dental sedation seriously enough to offer four different levels of sedation, guaranteed to meet all your needs. Here’s how it breaks down:

Nitrous oxide is a minor sedative that leaves you relaxed but fully awake. It is commonly known as laughing gas.

IV sedation is powerful and instantaneous, it gets you somewhere close to sleep but you will still be able to respond to our questions and instructions.

General anesthesia is the highest level available. You’ll sleep through your entire appointment! We are one of the few practices in the region that is certified to deliver this strong sedation.
