Make Fluoride Part Of Your Prevention Plan

July 2, 2016

Hello and welcome to the New Albany Implants blog!

We hope that you are enjoying your summer and finding plenty of reasons to smile. Don’t forget to keep up with your home hygiene habits and to schedule your next preventive appointment with Dr. Ron or Dr. Brad.

Our team has all the tools, technology, and training to keep your smile looking great all through life. We can not stress enough the importance of prevention when it comes to oral health.

You should already know about brushing and flossing and coming in to visit our Southern Indiana office fevery 3-6 months for professional teeth cleanings and dental checkups. But are you aware how easily you can add an extra layer of protection with fluoride?

Today we want to explore the benefits of fluoride further. Keep reading, and then be sure to follow up to take the next step towards a healthier smile!

The Importance Of Fluoride

The truth is that your teeth are never really safe. In fact, dangerous strains of bacteria are on the loose before you even have teeth!

Here’s how it happens: when you ingest sugary foods, plaque bacteria quickly metabolizes it into acids that erode your teeth.

This is a slow process of wearing down the enamel until a menacing hole takes form. Theses “cavities” might not be noticeable to the untrained eye, but they will soon make their presence known.

Dental fillings have gotten better over the years, and they can restore your health after cavities and save you from root canals and extractions. That is all well and good. But not as good as preventive care.

Fluoride Works On Your Behalf

By treating you with fluoride we can help prevent future bacteria from sticking to your teeth and we can help rebuild some of the enamel that was lost to those troublesome acids. This is where we actually “remineralize” your teeth!

You see, fluoride has the ability to seep into the enamel pores on your teeth. It then attracts calcium and phosphate that’s already present in your saliva. Once those are lured into bonding with your teeth, they rebuild the enamel and can even make your teeth stronger than they were before.

Preventive Dentistry Matters

We are here as your partner in oral health. We have special tools and knowledge that you just don’t have access to at home. But we won’t be able to help much if you never take advantage of all that we have to offer. Still, there is a surprising number of folks in our community who don’t see the dentist on a regular basis. Putting off your preventive care is never going to be in your best interest.

Seeing Dr. Ron or Dr. Brad every 3-6 months will allow us to stay in tune with your needs. We will be able to spot and shut down potential problems earlier, keep your teeth healthy and your smile looking great.

As part of our program of prevention, we can set you up with fluoride treatments during your normal checkup. And in between office visits, you can keep up the good work at home.

Add Fluoride To Your Daily Drill

We recommend using a fluoride toothpaste and rinsing regularly with mouthwash. It’s also important to take advantage of water fluoridation. Our local tap water is actually loaded with cavity-preventing fluoride!
