Lowering Your Risk For Tooth Loss

Hello and welcome to another September edition of the New Albany Implants blog!

As your dental implant experts in the Southern Indiana region, we are here to help you regain your confidence and your dignity following tooth loss as an adult.

Still, if you haven’t gotten to that point, our preference is always to help you hold onto your natural smile.

Keep reading to see some of the major risk factors that contribute to tooth loss, and then be sure to get in touch with our New Albany, Indiana office to schedule your complimentary consultation with Dr. Ron.

One way or another, we’ll get you smiling again!

Your Age

Like the Rolling Stones said (more or less), in some respects it can be a real drag getting older. As we age our bodies evolve, and unanticipated problems can arise. You may be shocked to hear that in regards to tooth loss the risks can significantly increase by your mid-30s. After that, the odds are stacked against you.

Gender

The numbers don’t lie. It’s just a fact that men tend to lose a lot more teeth than women. So, especially if you are 35 or older, you will need to be extra diligent as a male.

Oral Hygiene

You have to do your part at home every day. If you don’t keep your teeth free of plaque bacteria you’re far more likely to end up with tooth decay and periodontal disease that will lead to tooth loss. So, brush, floss, and rinse regularly! And come see us.

Regular Cleanings & Exams

It is staggering to consider that only about 13 percent of adults with tooth loss reported having a dental appointment within the prior six months.

Visiting our New Albany dentist’s office twice a year is an easy thing to do, and it could save your smile as well as your life. We can screen for cancer and other bad things every time you come in for a cleaning and oral exam. Plus, we have the tools, training, and technology to get you back on track fast should anything ever be amiss.

Tobacco

If you don’t smoke, don’t start! Tobacco smoke is a major risk factor for gum disease as well as tooth loss. This is due to the fact that it changes the bacterial balance of your mouth. The sad truth is that if you’re a lifelong smoker it’s almost a sure thing that you’ll eventually need to replace some teeth. We can help with that, for sure, but better to prevent tooth loss in the first place.

Sugar

Sugar plays a role in more ways than one. But we have found that patients with diabetes are at extreme risk for gum disease (which is the leading cause of tooth loss).

Blood Pressure

Interestingly enough, gum disease and high-blood pressure are correlated but it seems to work in both directions.

You Can Prevent Tooth Loss!

Together, we can make a difference in your health and happiness. Dr. Ron and the rest of our team will be here for you, whatever your needs may be. Consistent hygiene practices at home, and frequent visits to our office can go a long way towards keeping, tooth loss, disease, and decay at bay.
