Choose a Dentist for Your “Difficult” Patient

Many things could label a patient as “difficult”. A patient could have a really bad dental situation, or a really bad attitude towards dental care. Some patients can’t help that they are difficult; these patients are probably special needs patients or patients with severe dental anxiety. What we find is that these patients generally have someone else choosing their dental care. These are the patients who would never come in without someone forcing them. If you’re that person making the decision for your difficult friends or family member, we have some tips and tricks to make this a bit easier on you.

1) Be Encouraging

Optimism can be contagious. We know difficult patients can really bring you down, but you can also boost them up a little bit by being genuinely optimistic. Once they are in the door, we will take over for you, but while you’re preparing for the visit, remind them that this is a good thing.

2) Be Honest

This is especially helpful for a patient who is skeptical about the dental office. Some people just need to know what to expect. If you can provide that information, that’s great! If you don’t know the answer to their question, feel free to call and ask!

3) Be Wise

You know your loved one much better than we do. Pay attention to their body language and expressions, and don’t push too hard too quickly. It’s ok to work up to a dental visit. It’s also a great idea, especially for special needs patients, to let the staff here know about any triggers that your loved one might have so that we can help them stay comfortable during the visit.

Remember, we have fantastic sedation options for patients who struggle at the dentist. There’s no reason to sacrifice the dental health of a loved one. You get them to the office, and let us take care of the rest. We are known as the most gentle dental office in Southern Indiana for a reason! Call us today! We look forward to seeing you soon!
