Every once in a great while we will see a patient who just doesn’t quite get it. They think that because of their new dental implants, they are done with the dental office forever. They think that they can kiss us goodbye and never have to come in again. This just isn’t true. Regardless of what form of dental restoration, or if you elect to have none: you are never finished with the dental office.
The fact of the matter is this: dentists care for more than your teeth. If you have no teeth, dentures, implants, or little wooden pegs, it really doesn’t matter. When we examine your mouth, we are looking for health. Healthy teeth, yes, but also healthy gums, a healthy tongue, a healthy saliva production, a healthy jaw bone, etc. Dentists check for gum disease, oral cancer, and infections of the mouth. This isn’t just about the pearly whites!
What This Means for You
After your dental implant procedure, we will give you instructions for care. Flossing, brushing, and rinsing are still very important to your oral health. In order to maintain your new smile, you will still need to visit a dentist regularly! If you have remaining natural teeth, you need to go twice a year. If you have completely restored your teeth with implants, you can probably go once a year, but you must still go!
Keeping your mouth healthy is about more than just keeping your teeth healthy. You can’t kiss the dentist goodbye, no matter what form of dental restoration you have. Contact us today if you have any questions or concerns. We’d love to hear from you!
