You Can Fight Bad Breath With Good Oral Hygiene

Welcome to the New Albany Implant blog!

We hope that your summer is going well so far and that you have plenty of reasons to smile!

In our Southern Indiana dental office, we offer a full range of preventive dentistry services that are designed to help you hold on to your original set of teeth all through life.

If you are already living without a full set of teeth, we can help you get back on track fast with one of our dental implant procedures (that is our specialty, after all).

Beyond that, we will be here to help you with any other problems along the way. Trust us, there are plenty of things that can go wrong in a mouth!

One common problem in our line of work is bad breath. Occasional bad breath is embarrassing, as we all know. But folks who suffer from a chronic condition known as halitosis have it even worse. This is nothing to be ashamed of, as it can happen to anyone. But we want you to know that there is plenty that you can do to better your situation.

Here are our suggestions for getting a handle on bad breath…

Skip The Mints

We know that when you get a horrible taste in your mouth, it’s easy to grab a mint, cover it up, and go on about your business. The bad thing is that most mints are full of sugar.

After the mint has dissolved in your mouth, all that lingers is a sugary residue that actually feeds the bacteria causing your breath problems. It can be a vicious cycle. If you have to, try chewing on some sugar-free gum instead of mints. Just skip the mints if at all possible!

Make Flossing A Daily Activity

Overcoming chronic bad breath is actually a matter of destroying bacteria. Brushing is a great start. But flossing is an even better weapon in this ongoing war. You should attempt to floss twice a day or more to drive bacteria out from the hard-to-get regions in-between your teeth.

Pay Attention To Your Tongue

If you are plagued by chronic bad breath, take some time to scrape and brush your tongue twice a day. Do it when you brush and floss! It will really make a difference.

Drink Lots Of Water

We have found that keeping yourself hydrated is perhaps the best thing you can do to ward off bad breath. This is because saliva naturally eliminates bacteria in your mouth that is causing the bad breath. But in order for saliva to be produced, you need to drink enough water. If you can find water with fluoride that is even better!
