Three Ways to Maintain a Healthy, Natural Smile

Many people tend to think of losing teeth as something that only happens to toddlers and the elderly. But anyone can lose a tooth. In fact, most of the tooth-loss injuries that occur in people under 35 are due to some kind of accident or fight. In other words, you never can tell exactly when you’re going to take a soccer cleat — or a fist — to the mouth.

That’s perhaps why cosmetic dentistry procedures have become so commonplace in the United States. Indeed, cosmetic dentistry is a booming industry, and it’s not just for tooth replacement, either. Whitening is probably the most common type of cosmetic dental work, though since the advent of invisible braces, that’s been an ever-popular choice among patients as well. There are a multitude of reasons why you could need lose a tooth, though. It helps to understand what to do to prevent those kinds of incidents from happening.

Avoiding physical confrontations and hazardous sports

There’s a difference between playing a friendly game of pickup basketball and going all-out on the court until you lose control and hurt yourself. Although accidents can happen at any time, there’s a something to be said for keeping your composure on the sports field, in order to ensure you don’t end up a few teeth lighter after the game. Additionally, try not to get involved in violent altercations as a general rule. You’ll be surprised how many teeth you save (and how much on legal bills!).

Brushing and flossing every single day

You’ve likely been told that since you were a child visiting your family dentist, but it’s still true today. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing (especially after meals) can greatly decrease the chances of harmful bacteria affecting your teeth and causing decay and other lasting problems. Listen to your family dentist from all those years ago: steadfastness to dental hygiene can help you save your smile.

Ditching the sugary snacks and sodas

Here’s another bit of advice you were likely privy to as a child. While sugar tastes oh so good (and makes us feel oh so fine), it can rot your teeth, leading to cavities and other problems down the road. The fewer chances you give it, the healthier your smile will likely remain. Then, you won’t need to foot the bill for any cosmetic dental procedures to repair the gaps inside your mouth — unless you want to, that is.

Of course, there are always dental implants if you want a lasting tooth replacement option that won’t simply pop out like dentures will. Ask your local tooth doc — or if you’re still on your parents’ plan, your family dentist — all about the services cosmetic options can offer a smile. In the meantime, here’s to brushing and flossing!
