Could Your Denture Cleaner Kill You?

March 26, 2016

Take a look at your bathroom counter and you’ll probably see some of these sights: cups for soaking your dentures, a special brush for keeping them clean, and some of those denture soak tablets that you drop in when you put them up for the night. What you may not realize is just how dangerous that cleaning solution is!

There are a number of common denture cleaning tablet brands that all have a dangerous ingredient in them called persulfate. This chemical can be absolutely deadly, and it might be sitting right on the bathroom counter of your New Albany home!

Why Cleaning Your Dentures Could Be Dangerous

Persulfate is a necessary part of many denture cleaners, but it’s also something that a lot of patients are allergic to. Have you ever experienced rashes, hives, itching, sensitivity, or pain when you put your dentures in? If so you might be allergic to the very thing you use to keep them clean!

Over time persulfate can do even more damage. Patients with an allergy to it have ended up with serious tissue damage, breathing difficulties, and even low blood pressure when using persulfate cleaners for a long time. That’s not the kind of thing your dentures should be doing to you!

Allergic reactions aren’t the only concern either – persulfate is incredibly toxic when ingested. There have been reports of late-night accidents where people have drank denture water, or accidentally ingested a tablet and ended up in the emergency room, or worse: it can even cause death.

Symptoms of persulfate poisoning include:

  • abdominal pain
  • blood in urine
  • internal bleeding
  • vomiting
  • trouble breathing
  • low blood pressure
  • stroke
  • death

Accidental consumption of even a little bit of persulfate can be dangerous or fatal – it’s scary to think that it’s right in your bathroom!

Alternatives To Typical Dentures Cleaners

If this is enough to put you off of persulfate cleaners we don’t blame you. There are a few different brands of denture cleaner available that don’t have persulfate in them, such as Fresh Guard and DentaSoak. As an alternative to buying these products you can also use a simple squirt of castile soap – it works great too!

Make sure you’re thoroughly brushing your dentures no matter what kind of cleaner you’re using, and always rinse your dentures off before putting them in your mouth in the morning.

Tired Of Life With Dentures?

If the idea of having to find a new denture cleaner, changing your daily habits, and dealing with more denture headaches has you saying “enough” we don’t blame you at all. Thankfully you’ve come to the right place to learn about denture alternatives!

At New Albany Implants we specialize in replacing dentures with full-mouth permanent bridges that look, feel, and behave just like real teeth. With just four dental implants in each arch you could be living life with a permanent set of teeth that you simply have to brush like the real thing.

Imagine being able to ditch your dentures, clear off your counter, and throw away all that denture garbage: you can! We can even have you in a brand new set of fixed teeth in just a single appointment. How amazing would it be to not ever have to worry about persulfate, dentures, or slipping teeth again?

Dental implants are simple titanium screws that are about the same size as a natural tooth root. They are placed in your jaw where your teeth used to be, where they bond strongly with your jawbone. Once healed dental implants are just as tough as real teeth, and with the One Day Smile Solution from our New Albany office you’ll be boasting over 90 percent of the function of natural teeth. You simply can’t come close to that with dentures!

Want To Find Out More?

Every dental implant patient starts the same way: with a face-to-face dental implant roadmap appointment. We’ll perform a comprehensive exam that will tell us everything we need to know about your oral health. We’ll use 3D scans, digital X-rays, and other metrics to determine the perfect treatment for your individual needs. Once we’ve come to a solid conclusion we’ll work with you to make your new permanent smile a reality!

You can go on worrying about toxic denture cleaners, removable teeth, and daily hassles or you can get the next best thing to natural teeth. It’s your call, and we’re ready to see you for a no-obligation roadmap appointment whenever you are!

Call our New Albany office today at 888-469-3982 or request a roadmap appointment online. We look forward to seeing you soon!
