IV Sedation For Comfortable Dental Care
Imagine walking into a dentist office without any worries or concerns. You trust the team at your dentist office, and you have no anxiety about what is about to happen.
Why? It could be because you are coming to New Albany Implants, where you can receive IV sedation dentistry.
IV sedation is an excellent option for many patients at our dentist office in New Albany, IN. With IV sedation, we can complete complicated procedures in a single visit. And people with moderate to severe dental anxiety can receive the dental care they need to keep their mouths healthy.
How Sedation Dentistry Could Help You
Believe it or not, sedation dentistry goes back at least 160 years when people used laughing gas (nitrous oxide) during what could be painful dental procedures.
IV sedation is an example of how sedation dentistry has become more effective with time.
In general, dental sedation helps patients who are dealing with dental anxiety or who are undergoing complicated treatments. Here are some of the reasons our patients find sedation dentistry helpful:
▸ It keeps them calm throughout their treatment.
▸ It prevents them from feeling any pain during the procedure.
▸ It helps them receive treatment without any memory of what happened.
▸ It allows them to complete their treatment in a single visit.
You may be able to relate to one or more of these. You also may have your own reasons for being interested in sedation dentistry.
In either case, your comfort is an essential part of your care at New Albany Implants.
Why Dental Sedation Matters To Us
For Dr. Ron Receveur, patient comfort is a matter of personal importance. He was born with a partial cleft and a congenitally missing tooth. As a result, he made a lot of visits to the dentist as a child.
Those experiences affected how he wanted to approach dental care for every patient. He wants anyone who sits in our dental chairs to feel as comfortable as possible. Part of doing that means being able to provide sedation dentistry.
Many dentists offer some form of dental sedation, but few dentists complete the training to be able to offer IV sedation. In Indiana, dentists must complete 60 hours of training, demonstrate their ability, and obtain a permit.
Instead of viewing this as an obstacle, Dr. Receveur saw this as an opportunity to help more patients receive the dental care they needed and deserved.
How IV Sedation Compares To Other Kinds Of Dental Sedation
As we noted above, IV sedation is one of the options available to you. Here’s a quick overview of different kinds of sedation dentistry:
▪︎ Nitrous oxide works quickly and continuously as long as the patient is breathing the gas. Minutes after you start to inhale nitrous oxide, you feel its effects.
When your treatment is over, you feel like yourself in a few minutes by exhaling any remaining gas. This is generally recommended for patients with mild dental anxiety.
▪︎ Oral conscious sedation is stronger than nitrous oxide. Oral sedation involves taking a pill prior to your dental care. It will take more time to feel its effects, but those effects can last for hours.
If you receive oral sedation, someone else should drive you to and from the dentist office.
▪︎ In a way, IV sedation combines the best of the other kinds of dental sedation.
IV sedation takes effect quickly, but its effects are strong. Unlike oral sedation, however, IV sedation can be adjusted during your treatment to ensure that you feel nothing.
While IV sedation works fast, it does take some time to wear off. Again, you will need a family member or friend to take you home if you receive IV sedation.
