Don’t Let Summer Ruin Your Smile
Nothing is greater than summer in Southern Indiana, and it will be here before you know it. There are a lot of good times to be had in summertime, but if you are not careful, summer can be a rough time on your teeth.
At New Albany Implants, we want you all to have a great summer, but we also want you to have a healthy smile and a clean bill of dental health. So while you are out enjoying the sun and the air of summer in Southern Indiana, take a moment to consider what you might be doing to your teeth.
Sports and Games
The summer is all about fun and games. Baseball season is in full effect, and Little Leaguers are swinging for the stars. Fly balls and rogue bats can be really hard on the teeth, though. You wouldn’t be the first person to lose their teeth to America’s Passtime.
Swimming pools have been the site of more than a few dental emergencies. Whether you smack your face against the wall in a fierce game of Marco Polo, or you slip on the diving board, a tooth injury can put you in the kiddie pool before you know it.
Even seemingly innocent games, like badminton, can ruin your summer if someone gets careless with the racquet.
A knocked out tooth can certainly put a damper on your summer fun. The only thing you can do is be careful, or sit on the sidelines, but what fun would that be?
Summer picnics and county fairs are part of what makes this country great. And all that food is just waiting to be enjoyed. Corn on the cob. Barbecued ribs. Fried chicken and pork sandwiches. You can wash it all down with a large glass of ice cold homemade lemonade. This is some of the best food in the world, but it’s hard to enjoy it if your teeth are giving you trouble.
Missing teeth or ill fitting denture make eating a difficult task. If you are in this situation, being surrounded by all this aromatic summer food could be torture. Not to mention that none of these foods are particularly good for your teeth in the first place. Corn husks get stuck in your teeth and cause irritation. Barbecue sauce is loaded with sticky sugars, like honey and molasses, that lead to tooth decay. Lemon not only contains sugar, and usually a lot of it, it is also high in acid, which weakens the enamel on your teeth.
All this food could be big trouble for your teeth, if you’re not careful.
Everything seems to be a little more laid back in the summer, especially for children. They get to stay up a little later, and sleep in in the morning. With no homework to take up all their time, they can just relax and go where the day takes them.
That’s just fine as long as this relaxed attitude doesn’t find its way into their oral hygiene routine. During the school year, kids usually have fairly rigid routines, but oftentimes these routines disappear over the summer.
If your kids start to skip brushing and flossing, they may end up paying come fall. Their next dental examination could reveal plaque build-up or even cavities, and then you will end up paying for it.
So, don’t let summer be an excuse for letting healthy habits slip, for you or your children. Be sure the keep up with a regular brushing and flossing routine.
At New Albany Implants, we have the solutions for your summer toothaches.
If you are avoiding summer food because of missing or unhealthy teeth, maybe it’s time to look into tooth replacement. A dental bridge will replace a missing tooth by anchoring a synthetic tooth to a healthy tooth on either side. If you are missing several teeth, then maybe dentures are for you. But if you don’t want to keep your teeth in a glass every night, then you should consider the One Day Smile Solution, which will permanently secure your replacement teeth directly to your jawbone.
