We’ve had a close relationship with our toothbrushes for centuries. Archaeologists have found that humans have used everything from chewing twigs, horse hair and even porcupine quills to clean teeth. Of course, we’ve modernized the toothbrush to maximize the reach and its ability to successfully remove debris and harmful plaque and tartar buildup. But the principle behind the toothbrush hasn’t change: It’s our best everyday tool in defending our teeth against tooth decay and gum disease.
It’s recommended that we use our toothbrush at least twice a day; and like any tool, it’s important to properly store, clean and replace your toothbrush as needed. Here are some tips on how to properly care for your toothbrush.
Wash, Rinse and Repeat
We recommend that you brush your teeth twice a day for a full two minutes, reaching every area of your mouth. Once you have finished brushing, rinse off any debris and store your toothbrush in an upright position so it can dry. It is recommended to store your toothbrush in an open space as opposed to a closed area or container. If the toothbrush is stored in a space like a closed container where it cannot dry, the moist environment allows for the rapid growth of microorganisims, which can cause oral infections.
Retiring Your Toothbrush
Your toothbrush is your best friend in the fight against cavities and gum disease, but it’s important not to get too attached to just one toothbrush. According to the American Dental Association, you should replace your toothbrush every three to four months. This is recommended because the bristles of the toothbrush wear out over time and greatly reduce the effectiveness.
