Treat Gum Disease Before It Turns Deadly

January 29, 2015

There is a well-document connection between oral health and serious ailments like heart disease and diabetes. Almost every year, scientists release new studies reminding us how serious gum disease can be. One of the most alarming pieces of information came when researchers found a two-way street between gum disease and disease like heart disease and diabetes – meaning one could contribute to the other.

So, it’s no surprise to us that researchers continue to unravel facts about how your oral health can affect your overall health. This year in Spain, a recent study found a connection between inflammatory gum disease and the increased risk of a severe heart attack. The findings were published in The Journal of Dental Research.

Researchers studied 112 patients who had the heart condition acute myocardial infarction. These patients were examined for periodontitis, as well as cardiology and biochemical tests. They found that the degree of chronic periodontitis is connected to acute myocardial infarction, making it possible for severe gum disease to be a predictor to massive heart issues.

One of the authors of the study, Francisco Aguado, said, “Chronic periodontitis appears as a death risk factor and it plays an important role in the prognosis of acute myocardial infarction.”

At New Albany Implants, we warn our patients every day about the risks of uncontrolled gum disease. While gum disease can be associated with bleeding or swollen gums, you could possibly have no symptoms. It’s literally a silent killer.

The only effective way to avoid gum disease is to brush and floss regularly and to visit your New Albany dentist twice a year for checkups. Gum disease is the No. 1 reason for tooth loss, which can then lead to the jawbone deterioration.

Gum disease is dangerous for your natural teeth or if you have dental implants. Serious gum disease can cause your dental implants to fail, much like it can your natural teeth. Don’t take that risk. Call us today to schedule your next dental exam and cleaning.

I’m the type of person that is scared of the dentist have been my whole life. I scheduled consultation with Dr Ron and he answered all my questions and more. He and his staff are great they made me feel comfortable the whole time. They used sedation for my implant procedure and it was the best decision I have ever made!! I had zero pain whatsoever. The best thing is that they have gave me the ability to smile again and to be happy. Thank you to everyone at New Albany Implants. I recommend them to anyone needing dental implants.

Amazing experience. If anyone is anxious about seeing a dentist I can assure you don’t have to be with Dr. Receveur. My only regret is not having it done sooner. His staff is pretty awesome too.

I recently had implants put in by Dr. Receveur. I was scheduled to have sedation that morning, but wasn't able to due to my sugar issues from diabetes. He assured me he would keep me comfortable so I agreed to go ahead with the procedure. He did just that, he kept me comfortable as promised and I didn't feel a thing. During the procedure he also talked to me the whole time explaining what he was doing, which also helped ease my anxiety. The entire staff there are so nice and informative, they can answer any questions you may have. All I can say is to anyone that is hesitant to have this procedure done, I honestly wish I would have had this done a long time ago! Dr. Receveur and his staff are AMAZING, and I would recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat!
