The Denture Diet: How to Eat with Your New Teeth

New dentures mean a chance for a renewed smile. The dentures you got might have restored a smile you thought you’ve lost, but you’re still getting used to a new set of teeth. Big adjustments must be made especially when you have more than a couple of dentures, whether permanent or removable.

Eating with new dentures doesn’t have to be difficult. In fact, you don’t have to alter your diet too much. Remembering the kinds of food to avoid will save you from damaging your new teeth. Below are the kinds of food you should avoid:

  • Crunchy Food– Whole apples, hard pretzels, and other crunchy food items may easily break your dentures. You must bite these types of food at a certain angle to break into the hard surface.
  • Raw Vegetables – some raw vegetables like carrots and celery are too hard to bite raw with dentures. Steam these vegetables to soften them up before eating. Try to avoid eating corn on the cob as well.
  • Tough Meats – some cuts of meat might be too chewy and tough to break with dentures. Slice them into bite sized pieces or substitute them with softer meats such as poultry.

Most types of food may be okay to eat if you prepare them properly. Small cuts and washing them down with lots of water may greatly improve your eating experience with dentures. A diet rich in vitamins and nutrients good for the oral cavity can help your overall oral health.

Whether you are getting removable or permanent dentures make sure they are of high quality to avoid replacements and emergency dental visits in the future.
