What you do before oral surgery will determine how well you are able to recover, so it is important to take care of things in the days before your appointment. You won’t be laid up for weeks after your surgery, but you can expect to be off your feet for a day or two while you recover from sedation and the actual procedure. Ask us for details about eating and smoking before and after surgery, and then follow these guidelines.
Make sure that you have a friend or family member who is willing to drive to and from the appointment. Ask that same person (or someone else) to be around for the rest of the day to help you with food and drink as you recover. Also, it’s just nice to have someone sit on the couch and watch movies with you!
Follow the Rules
The restrictions that we give you regarding food and smoking before your appointment are very serious. It could postpone your surgery if you fail to follow those guidelines. Ask us about any exceptions (diabetics, for example, are often exempt from fasting).
Know What to Wear
Avoid jewelry, contacts, heavy clothing, and lots of makeup (especially lipstick). Dress in a comfortable outfit that is lightweight (we have blankets if you get cold!). Bring some lip balm in case your lips get chapped during the procedure.
