It’s easy to let fear take the reigns in a lot of our decision making. We’re afraid we won’t like that new restaurant. We’re afraid to leave the house empty during vacation. We’re afraid a loved one won’t like that gift. We’re afraid we won’t fit in with that group. The list could continue forever because fears are endless. Fear is ok, but it is something to be overcome, especially if fear is keeping you from getting a healthy smile!
The fear cycle in dentistry is vicious. You are afraid to see the dentist, so you avoid it. Eventually, you can’t stand the problem/pain any longer, and you make the appointment. You have to undergo a difficult procedure because the problem has escalated so far (self-fulfilling prophecy). You become more afraid of the dentist, so you continue to avoid the dentist. Are you caught in this cycle? Put fear in its place!
Where Does Fear Belong?
There’s nothing wrong with fear. It is healthy and good to be afraid of dangerous situations, but you have to teach your brain what is dangerous and what is not. Maybe in the past, you have only experienced fearful dental appointments. If that’s the case, it’s time to retrain your brain with good, safe appointments. I don’t mean appointments with no work, I mean appointments where you get the work done that you need, but you don’t feel afraid!
We can do that at New Albany Implants. People come from hundreds of miles away to see the most gentle dentist around! Through our extensive sedation program, we are sure to find something that works for you within your comfort level. We offer gaseous, oral, and IV sedation. In our next post, we will discuss these options in depth.
