No Tension With Dental Sedation

When you think of sedation dentistry, you probably think of people who are extremely phobic of the dentist. People who would rather die than get their teeth cleaned. People who couldn’t sit still for an examination even if you paid them to.

Certainly, sedation dentistry is a wonderful thing for people like this. It gets them into the dentist’s office, and gets them the dental care they need to stay healthy and look great.

But even if you are not particularly afraid of the dentist, dental sedation may be something to consider to make your dental experience all the more comfortable and painless. Sometimes the pain you feel after a dental procedure is not a direct result from the dental work you’ve had done. If you are experiencing headaches, muscle soreness, or lack of energy after a dental procedure, then you might be tensing up while your dentist works, whether or not you even realize it.

Tension can cause all sorts of aches and pains, so at New Albany Implants, we want to make sure you are relaxed, and free of tension when you receive dental care at our office in Southern Indiana. That is why we offer a variety of dental sedation options.

You don’t have to be afraid of the dentist to become uncomfortable when undergoing a procedure. Whether it’s a root canal or a simple cleaning, if you find yourself gripping the armrest of your dental chair, you may be tensing up. This prolonged constriction of your muscles causes strain. If you are tensing your neck and shoulder muscle, you are likely to get a headache and backache that could last into the next day.

Types of Sedation

There is no need to let the tension you experience during a dental visit give you any more headaches. Sedation dentistry will allow you to relax and sit still while we fix your teeth.

Inhaled

Nitrous Oxide is a form of sedation you are probably familiar with. Commonly called, “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide is an effective form of sedation if you are having a relatively simple procedure that doesn’t require you to sit still for an especially long period of time. We will mix the gas with oxygen and adjust the amount of nitrous oxide you are inhaling based on your need.

IV

This type of sedation is primarily for those patients who have an extreme fear of the dentist. A sedative is delivered through IV that induces sleep in about a minute. You will not be conscious at all when you are under. You will feel nothing.

If you are not seriously afraid of the dentist, and only need to relax a little to avoid the pain caused by tension, then you may not need IV sedation. However, if you need to have quite a bit of dental work done, you may want to consider this type of sedation because it will allow us to perform multiple procedures in one prolonged visit.
