Know What’s Hurting Your Teeth

December 9, 2014

Caring for your teeth is a life-long commitment. We might read that our teeth are more susceptible to cavities at “this age” or “that age,” but the truth is it’s important and necessary to practice good oral hygiene our entire life. Tooth decay and gum disease do not discriminate by age; they can affect us all at any given time.

So as we age, it’s more important than ever to maintain our oral health and received dental cleanings and examination twice a year. At New Albany Implants, we provide the highest quality preventive care, screenings and cleanings in order to ensure your teeth will stay healthy and functional.

Staying Happy and Healthy
Once our permanent teeth come in, it’s our job to protect them from cavities and decay. The biggest threat to our teeth are starchy foods and sugar. We’ve heard that since we were youngsters, but it’s worth mentioning again. When we expose our teeth to those foods, we put ourselves at a higher risk of cavities and enamel erosion. Preserving your enamel is essential because it protects your tooth and helps you maintain a white and bright smile for years to come.

If you consume sugary foods or foods high in starch, rinse your mouth out with water to prevent the buildup of plaque and bacteria. For a better diet and healthy teeth, try to avoid snacking throughout the day. Snacking keeps the acid levels in your mouth high which can damage your enamel and increase your risk of cavities.

If you really want to keep your teeth healthy and strong, your best bet is to brush twice and floss daily. Also, visit our office for cleanings and checkups twice a year. If you still haven’t scheduled your second visit with us this year, there is still time. Call us today and set up an appointment.
