Gum Disease and Dental Implants

September 12, 2014

It would be nice if there was a time when you could just stop worrying about your teeth. When you could have an ultimate dental procedure that would completely end your need to brush, floss, or go to the dentist ever again. Unfortunately, that’s about as likely as finding a candy bar that will make you lose weight. Even after you lose all of your natural teeth and have a restoration, you are still going to need to take care of your mouth so that your restorations stay healthy, especially when it comes to dental implants.

We place a lot of dental implants here in the office, and we are very pleased with the results. Caring for those implants is very important in determining if they will stay or not. The greatest danger to your natural teeth is actually the greatest danger to your dental implants, too: gum disease. This is especially true if gum disease is what took your natural teeth in the first place. In order to protect your implants, you must practice a good oral hygiene routine.

Caring For Implants

Caring for implants is very similar to caring for your natural teeth. Brushing and flossing is paramount to maintaining a healthy smile. Flossing, especially, is important for dental implants because it removes the bacteria that can cause gum disease. If you were to get a serious case of gum disease with dental implants, you might lost your implants because the disease will weaken the bone holding the implants in place. Schedule a routine dental exam and cleaning, but be sure that your dentist of choice is equipped to clean around dental implants.

Protecting your dental implant is about protecting your smile, and if that’s not enough incentive for you, think about protecting your investment. When you make that payment for a dental implant, we want to see you do what you can to protect it from harm. Contact us today if you have questions about how to best care for your implant. We’d love to hear from you!

My old body has enough titanium to build an F-35. Having may joint replacements requires special dental car. Are you prepared for a 77 year old guy who has had a little too much fun when I was young and and have titanium in my knees back and neck. I also have an aortic stint that has titanium mesh. I think I am missing 9 teeth some of which has had a root canal, crown then extraction.
